HLB Calculator

Accurately determine the Hydrophilic–Lipophilic Balance (HLB) for your emulsifier blend. This easy-to-use tool helps you formulate stable emulsions for cosmetics and industrial applications.

What is HLB?

The Hydrophilic–Lipophilic Balance (HLB) is a measure of the balance between the hydrophilic and lipophilic portions of a surfactant molecule. The HLB value is used to determine the type of emulsion that can be formed by a surfactant.

The HLB value is a number between 0 and 20. A low HLB value (0–6) indicates a lipophilic surfactant that is more soluble in oil, while a high HLB value (8–18) indicates a hydrophilic surfactant that is more soluble in water.

The HLB value of a surfactant blend is calculated by taking the weighted average of the HLB values of the individual surfactants in the blend.
